Meaning of Alkanols
Alkanols, otherwise called alcohol, are organic compounds which consist of an alkane that contains a hydroxyl (OH) group. The general molecular formular for alkanols is CnH2n+1OH or ROH (for alcohol).
Classes of Alkanols
There are three classes of alkanols – primary, secondary and tertiary.
1. Primary (1º) alkanols: These have only one alkyls group attached to the carbon atom that carries the hydroxyl group e.g. C2H5OH, C4H9OH etc. Example: C2H5OH,
General Structure of Primary Alkanol
2. Secondary (2º) alkanols: These have two alkyls attached to the carbon that carries the hydroxyl group e.g.
