The Meaning of Civil Society

Civil society is defined as the entire range of organized groups and institutions that are independent of the state, voluntary, and at least to some extent, self-generating and self- reliant.

Civil society is composed of the totality of voluntary civic and social organizations and institutions that form the basis of a functioning society. Civil societies encompass all non-governmental organizations (NGOs), private voluntary organizations (PVOs), clubs, trade unions, charity groups, the media organizations, labour unions, professional associations, and all such groups that give voice to the various sectors of the society and enhance public participation in democracy.

The Functions of Civil Society

Civil society performs the following functions:

  1. Civil society advocates for good governance.
  2. They act as watchdog to the activities of government.
  3. They promote political participation.
  4. Civil society promotes poverty alleviation programmes and welfare services.
