The Meaning of Democracy
Democracy is a system of government where the will of the majority of the people in a political setting predominates. It simply means the rule of the masses. Democracy originates from the Greek, who practised it as DIRECT DEMOCRACY. The modern form of democracy was founded in France in 1789 and propagated by the United States of America.
The Importance of Democracy
Democracy is important in the following ways:
- It provides an easy means of governing people even when they emerge from diverse cultural backgrounds like Nigeria.
- It allows for the election of the best hands and brains in government.
- It ensures the maintenance of law and order which is one of the major responsibilities of government.
- It makes the masses the sole determinants of government actions and activities through their mandates.
- It reduces the incidents of sit-tight syndrome noticeable in dictatorship and militarized states.
