Mites
Mites are unsegmented pests with eight walking legs. They infest animals, plants and stored food. They cause skin diseases like Mange and scab in animals and scabies in man. The life cycle involves eggs (laid on skin), nymph (moult twice) and adult. All the stages take place within three weeks. The red mite causes heavy loss in poultry.
Life Cycle of Mites
Metamorphosis is incomplete.
1. Eggs
The female scabies mites select place on the body where the skin is thin such as between the fingers and wrists, etc. The female burrows into the superficial layer of the skin and makes tunnels in which she lays about 30 eggs at the rate of 2-3 per day.
2. Larva
After 3-4 days the eggs hatch into larva. The larva are six legged. These larvae crawl out from the burrows.
