The Meaning of Political Apathy

Apathy stems from the ancient Greek word apathiens, which means “lack of feelings”. Apathy is an attitude, not an absence of activity; the feeling of not being interested or not caring either about a particular thing or about life. Political apathy therefore is a situation whereby citizens show negative attitude to the political activities/affairs of their country.

The Dangers of Political Apathy

The following are the dangers of political apathy:

  1. Political apathy leads to a poor standard of living.
  2. It breeds an irresponsible government.
  3. It creates a corrupt electoral system
  4. It hinders national progress and development
  5. It allows political charlatans and prostitutes to dominate the affairs of public governance.
  6. It leads to mismanagement of human and material resources as people with low level of management are left to manage the nation’s resources.
  7. It reduces the level of political participation in a country or society.
