Figures of Comparison and Sound

1. Simile:

This is a comparison of two things that are different in kind but are the same in one particular aspect. It is generally introduced by ‘like’ and ‘as’.

Examples:

Emeka is as brave as a lion.

He talks like Adolf Hitler.

He is as forthright as a saint.

2. Metaphor:

A direct comparison whereby one thing is given the quality of another. Instead of saying A is like B, we say A is B.

Examples:

He fought like a lion on the battlefield.  ⇒  He was a lion in battle.

His heart is as strong as a stone. ⇒  He has a heart of stone.

He is like a light to our community. ⇒  He is the light of our community.

3. Personification:

When an inanimate object is made to have the characteristics of a human being, that inanimate object is said to be personified.
