The Meaning of Human Rights

Human rights refer to the benefits and privileges which a citizen receives due to his membership of a country. Human rights are the basic natural rights which are important for human existence. All individuals are entitled to them and are expected to enjoy them in full. These rights are inalienable and unchangeable. They cannot be taken away from anyone except the law permits that. It is important to note that human rights are fundamental because they are recognized by the state and entrenched in the country’s constitution.

In 1945, the United Nations Organization was formed and was the first to put up a formal global set to define human rights. A committee was established by the United Nations, which drafted the document that defined and universally granted basic rights to all human beings and called them the “equal and inalienable rights of every human being”.

The declaration of human rights, the UDHR, was adopted by the United Nation’s General Assembly on December 10, 1948.
