IMPORTANCE OF ACCURATE NATIONAL POPULATION CENSUS

The Importance of accurate national population census include the following:

  1. Resource sharing: Accurate national population census is useful for resource sharing. The population size of any area, are consider when government is allotting resources, for example, the population of the 36 states and the Federal capital territory of Nigeria varies. The population size of each state, determine the revenue allocation, the number of local government council area,and also determined the political representation of the state.
  2. Population control: Accurate statistical record keeping of the members of a given population help in the control of population of such an area or country.
  3. National planning: Population census helps the government in planning for some of the important social facilities for national development. As it provides the government with relevant data for planning.
  4. Decision making and Evaluation: Population census is useful in decision making and evaluation of various government intervention programmes.
  5. Employment or Human Power: Population census helps the government to know the rate or level of unemployment in a particular area or country the information obtained through population census will help in the management and planning for employment of the citizens through provision of jobs
  6. Population Projection and Future: Regular and accurate population census is vital for population projection to determine the rate of population growth and how to control it, for instance, the population in 1991 was 88.9MILLION, The projection in 2003 was 125, 252, 844.
