The Meaning of Interpersonal Relationships
Relationship refers to the way in which people, groups or entities behave towards one another or deal with one another. Inter personal relationship is the mutual, reciprocal relationship shared among people in the community. It may be based on love, like, business interaction or some other type of social commitments. It takes place in different contexts such as family, friends, marriage, association, work, clubs, neighborhood and places of worship. It may be controlled by law, customs or mutual agreement.
Types of Interpersonal Relationships
The following are the types of interpersonal relationships:
(i) Kinship and family relationship: This is relationship by blood, i.e. mother, father, son or daughter and other extended members of the family.
(ii) Professional/business relationships: These are people associated by work or business.
(iii) Marriage: People are associated by marriage. Husband, wife, father-in-law, and mother-in-law are all associated by marriage.
