Introduction to Poetry

Poetry is any imaginative writing in lines of a certain length. It is the oldest genre of Literature. It is a form of literary expression that creates effects by the sound and imagery of its language. ‘Poetry’ as a word is sometimes used to mean any work of art written in verse. Poetic works are essential in rhymes and stanzas thus differentiating the genre from other types of genres.

 

Types of Poetry

There are different types of poetry however, the main major types are the epic, the ballad, lyric, the sonnet, the ode and the elegy. Other forms of poetry include limerick, lullaby, panegyric, dirge, the pastoral poem, the blank/ free verse, and the pastoral elegy.

1. The Epic:

This refers to a long narrative poem that focuses on a heroic figure or group or on an event that forms the cultural history of a tribe or nation. In epic poetry, the hero goes through a series of adventures that tests his character, strength and intellect.
