Introduction
Popular participation can be grouped into two modes, representing how popular participation is done in developed areas and rural areas within the country. They are traditional modes of popular participation and modern modes of popular participation.
Traditional Modes of Popular Participation
Every society has a developed system and structure for attending to political, economic, cultural, judicial and other social issues in their environment.
- The village or market square serves as a sacred function for the coming together of all traditional institutions or communities. They use the sacred square any time there is need to elect political leaders or village head, or pronounce a taboo, or pass judgement on defaulting community members, etc.
- The town crier with the wooden or metal gong or gunshots or fire signal could be used to alert the people to gather at the square for a crucial meeting.
- In selecting a political leader, when it is not hereditary, the people are asked to queue behind the candidate of their choice.
