Physical Education in the Pre-colonial Period

Before the advent of the Europeans in Nigeria, evidence of participation in physical education cannot be ruled out. It was obvious that as in other countries, Nigerians participated in many physical activities for many intrinsic and extrinsic reasons. Such activities were performed with the view of meeting daily human and other essential needs such as food, clothes, shelter and general protection.

Various forms of physical education activities were also demonstrated on occasions such as traditional festivals and worship, funeral entertainment, ancestral worship and sacrifices to gods.
