The Meaning of Popular Participation

Popular participation is the active involvement in socio-political and economic activities of a country by her citizens. It can also be seen as a process of involving the citizens in the government of their country and determination of important matters of the state.

Types of Popular Participation

The following are the types of popular participation:

(i) Political Popular Participation:

This type of participation relates to political campaigning, voting during elections, holding political offices, contesting elections, financial and material assistance to political candidates and parties.

(ii) Social Popular Participation:

This relates to the participation of citizens in the social activities such as belonging to organizations, groups and associations that are of benefit to the citizen, community and society as a whole.

(iii) Religious Popular Participation:

This form of participation cuts across religious groups such as Christians, Muslims, as well as the African traditional religious laws.
