Definition of Harmony

Harmony is the combination of two or more sounds; they are to be heard together or at the same time. Harmony originated around the 9th century A.D.

Features of Harmony

These consist of chords and progressions.

A chord is the sounding together of two or more notes, while progression is the manner in which chords or melodic tones follow each other; a succession of chords or tones. The simplest form of harmony is, the two-part.

Two-Part Harmony

Two-part writing entails writing a second part to a given melody based on a particular chord scheme. In some circumstances, the second part may be provided, and a melody is required to be supplied.
