TOPIC: Consonants /j/, /w/ and /l/

Consonant Sound /l/

This consonant is an alveolar lateral. This implies that the tip of the tongue must articulate with the alveolar ridge for its production. This consonant occurs as follows:-

Consonant Sound /w/

This is a bilabial approximant sound.  This means that the two lips are involved in its articulation. It occurs in three ways: ‘w’ as in ‘wet’, ‘wh’ as in ‘wheat’ and ‘qu’ as in ‘quiet’. Study the following examples:

Consonant Sound /j/

Like /w/ this sound is also a bilabial approximant–the two lips are involved in its production. Also together with /w/ it is a ‘glide’ because the tongue assumes a peculiar position in its articulation.
