TOPIC: Rising and Falling Tunes

The Falling Tune

This is where a low level of voice finally falls on the last stressed syllable in a sentence. In this case, the first stressed syllable in the sentence is the highest level of the voice, and each succeeding stressed syllable is said with a slightly lower level of the voice; in this way, the level of the voice gradually descends until the last stressed syllable which the lowest and final fall.

The falling tune is usually used in declarative sentences, commands, exclamations and wh-questions (questions which demand some explanation). These are illustrated below, with the arrow at the last stressed syllable in the sentence indicating the direction of the movement of the level of the voice.
