Description of Vowel Sound /u/
This is a short, back, half-close, rounded vowel sound. This vowel has the following spelling symbols.
‘o’ e.g.; wolf, woman, bosom
‘oo’ e.g.; cook, good, wood, foot, hook, shook etc.
‘ou’ e.g.; courier, could, should, would
‘u’ e.g.; put, sugar, cushion, butcher, bush etc.
Note: In most cases, when ‘oo’ comes before a ‘k’, as well as‘t’ and‘d’, it represents /ʋ/.
