TOPIC: Diphthongs- Contrasting /ei/, /ai/, /iə /, /eə/
Meaning of Diphthong
A diphthong is a Greek word which means “double sound”. The articulation of diphthongs involves a glide from one vowel quality to the other. A diphthong is therefore a vowel which changes its quality in the process of its articulation. It maintains two vowel qualities.
This can be exemplified in the sounds below:
/ei/ as in cake /keik/
/ai/ as in kite /kait/
/iə / as in career /kəriə/
/eə/ as in care /keə/
Diphthong /ei/
This is a closing diphthong with the gliding movement of the tongue from the/ sound to the/i/ sound.
