Signs and Symptoms of Drug Abuse

There are core signs to watch out for in people especially a child involved in drug use. The need to be able to recognize early use of drugs is very important. Early detection, coupled with prompt intervention goes a long way in helping to remedy the problem. Below are some of the symptoms:

  1. Possession of drugs.
  2. Possession of drug related paraphernalia like pipe, rolling papers, syringes, lighters, matches, bottle openers, ash-trays etc.
  3. Withdrawn syndrome and erratic behaviour.
  4. Tardiness and truancy.
  5. Downward performance in school work.
  6. Deviancy.
  7. Deterioration in health.
  8. Memory lapses, short attention span, difficulty in concentration.
  9. Increasing and inappropriate anger, hostility, irritability, secretiveness.
  10. Unusual use of dark glasses.

Behaviour of Drug Addicts

Some of the behaviour patterns exhibited by drug addicts are as follows:

  1. Slow and incoherent speech.
