Meaning of Employment

Employment refers to the engagement of labor in meaningful and productive activities. It can also be defined as the state of being employed.

Meaning of Unemployment

Unemployment may be defined as the condition in which a trained, willing and capable job seeker has no paid work to do to earn a livelihood. Unemployment also means the state of being unemployed. It can be found in the following forms:

(i) Structural unemployment: This happens when there is a shift in demand.

(ii) Technical unemployment: This is caused by changes in techniques, methods and tools used in production, e.g., change from labour intensive to capital intensive method of production.

(iii) Seasonal unemployment: Those who are employed in a particular season become unemployed when such season fades out, e.g.
