Meaning of Election
Election is the process of voting to choose people for official positions. It is also referred to as an act of choosing or selecting candidate who will represent the people in the government of a country. Election is also said to be a contest between competing political parties or groups for government power.
Some of the positions for which election is made include president, governors, legislators and local government chairperson. The individual doing the voting is the voter or the electorate and the process of the election is the electoral system.
Importance of Election
The following are the importance of election.
- Elections give people the opportunity to choose their leaders.
- Through election the principle of democracy is promoted.
- It gives elected representative the legitimate right to rule. It is a fair and civilized way of placing people in the position of authority.
- Election will enable the government to know the mind of the people, which is called public opinion
- It is used to assess the performance of elected public officers.
