The Meaning of Public Service

The public service is defined as the administrative unit of the government through which government’s day to day operations and activities are carried out for the smooth operation of the government.

The public service embraces the  entire civil service and other parastatals, commissions, armed forces, polices, corporations, local government service and other agencies of government that carry out the day to day activities of the different levels of government in the country.

Difference between Public Service and Civil Service

It is important to note that public service is different from the civil service. While the civil service is a component of the public service, it is that unit of the executive arm of government responsible for implementing the policies and programmes of government. Civil service workers are called civil servants and usually recruited by the civil service commission and paid from the consolidated fund.
