The Meaning of the Majority
Democracy as a system of government thrives on the rule of the majority. The majority, here, means the dominant group which is determined by the party or individual who emerges victorious in an election by securing the highest number of the total votes cast.
The Meaning of Minority Group
The term minority group entails a relatively small group within a community or country that is different because of race, religion, language, opinion, political convictions, etc. Such groups in most cases feel inferior, marginalized, cheated or neglected in the distribution of amenities, employment and other benefits of governance and democracy.
The Rationale/Reasons for the Existence of Minorities in Society
Minority groups exist in society because of the following:
- Boundary adjustment.
- Creation of local government areas or states.
- Formation of clubs and organizations, such as political parties, churches, social clubs, etc.
