Using Instruction to Sketch the Style

Patterns are body measurements that are developed on paper. The patterns are used to cut out the fabric pieces for a garment.

Instructions required to sketch different styles of clothes from commercial or local patterns are obtained from pattern symbols.

Making the Garment Using a Pattern

  1. Lay out every pattern piece.
  2. Place fabric correctly on pattern with enough seam allowances. Pin fabric to pattern.
  3. Cut out the material.
  4. Mark darts, tucks, stitches and gathers.
  5. Remove pins.
  6. Put the dress together by tacking the center front and back.
  7. Work the gathers.
  8. Tack the lower part of the bodice to the yoke.
  9. Tack the shoulder seams and the side seams of the bodice.
  10. Fit, and pin any alteration.
  11. Stitch darts or yokes, press open the seams.
