MARKING SCHEME FOR SS2 AGRICULTURAL SCIENCE FIRST TERM EXAM
SECTION A: OBJECTIVE TEST
Allocation of Marks: 1/2 mark each = 30 marks
SECTION B: ESSAY
ALLOCATION OF MARKS: 10 marks each = 30 marks in total
1.(a) Irrigation is the artificial application of water to the soil for the purpose of supplying moisture for plant growth. This is because water is the most important determining factor in crop production while drainage is the removal of excess water from the farm. (4 marks)
(b) Surface irrigation: This is an irrigation system whereby water is directed through surface channels to flow into the farm. Water is conveyed from the water source such as a stream, river, or dam to farmland. This method is further subdivided into the following types:
(i) Uncontrolled or Wild Flooding: It is the earliest method used on smooth land with regular and moderate slopes. In other words, water is allowed to flow freely from field ditches into the farm without bonds to check its flow. It is practised in areas water is in abundant supply and readily available.
(ii) Border (Basin) Irrigation: This refers to controlled flooding of farmland.
