Meaning of Circulatory System

This system is concerned with the transportation of certain blood substances round the body of the animal. The circulatory system consists of the heart, blood vessels e.g. arteries, veins and capillaries.

The Blood

The blood is a circulatory tissue, and it consist of the liquid part called plasma and the cell or particle-like structure called corpuscles. The plasma consist of substances like protein e.g. fibrinogen, prothrombin, food substances, hormones, water, gases like oxygen and carbon dioxiode, and waste products. Plasma without protein is called serum.

 

Blood Cells

  1. Red blood cell/erythrocytes
  2. White blood cell/leucocytes
  3. Blood platelets/thrombocytes

 

Functions of Each Blood Cell

  1. Red blood cell which is responsible for absorption and transportation of oxygen round the body. Carry Co2 from the body to the lungs for excretion.
