Meaning of Theatre Design
Theatre design is the art of creating a colourful and conducive auditorium for dramatic performance. It is the visual aspects of the production of a play. It is also known as spectacle. It includes costume, props, make-up, lighting, scenery etc. Spectacle offers information about the play and adds to the beauty of the performance. In fact, spectacle contributes to the total effect of the play.
Areas of Theatre Design
(i) Set: It is the physical surrounding in which the performance takes place.
(ii) Costumes: It is the dress worn by a performer or actor to portray a character.
(iii) Light: It is an illumination used to make the performers and their environment visible to the audience.
(iv) Make-up: It is the material, most especially cosmetics used on actors to give the interpretation of a particular character.
