Characterisation in ‘She Stoops to Conquer’
The characters in the drama ‘She Stoops to Conquer’ are well formed to suit the role they are to perform. As a comedy of manners, the characters are to conform and attempt to preserve standards of polite behaviour that contrasts to their true behaviour. Consequently, some characters are flat. Such characters include Tony Lumpkin, who is mischievous, and he sets the initial deception of Marlow that sets up the plot; because of his role, Oliver creates him as a flat character and Mrs. Hardcastle who portrays a corrupt and eccentric character. She is greedy and selfish. She wants to keep Constance fortune in the family by making Tony, her son, to marry her. She is the only character that is not happy at the end.
Mr. Hardcastle is a dynamic character. Oliver creates him as a level headed countryman who loves everything old.
