Characterisation
This majorly refers to the contributions of the characters in a literary text to the development of the plot. Walpole’s Castle of Otranto is filled with various characters ranging from major to minor. Some of the characters are: Manfred, Hippolita,Conrad, Matilda, Isabella, Theodore, Friar Jerome, Frederic, Bianca etc.
Manfred
He is the head and lord of the Castle of Otranto. He is the husband of Hippolita, the father of Conrad and Matilda. He becomes disturbed when his son Conrad is killed and hatches the idea of marrying Isabella and divorcing Hippolita. He wants to marry someone who is supposed to marry his son Conrad. Manfred is a dictatorial leader and the antagonist hero of the novel because he is the generator of its undercurrent conflict. He is a malevolent and an overbearing character who is also over ambitious. Lord Manfred can also be said to be an irrational character and this drives him to make rash decisions.
