Definition of Matrix
A matrix (plural matrices) is a rectangular array of numbers, symbols, or expressions, arranged in rows and columns. For example, the dimensions of the matrix below are 2 × 3 (read “two by three”), because there are two rows and three columns:
\(\begin{bmatrix} 5 & 1 & 3\\ 2 & 4 & 4 \end{bmatrix}\)
The following below are also examples of matrices:
(a) \(\begin{Bmatrix} -1 & 3 & 10\end{Bmatrix}\)
(b) \(\begin{Bmatrix} 4 & 5 \\-6 & 0 \\-2 & 18\end{Bmatrix}\)
(c) \(\begin{Bmatrix} 9 & 10 & 7 \\ -3 & 8 & 5 \\ 13 & 0 & 1\end{Bmatrix}\)
(d) \(\begin{Bmatrix} 2 \\ -1 \\ 4\end{Bmatrix}\)
The Order of Matrix
The matrices above can be named as explained in the example given in the definition.
