Meaning of Drug Trafficking

Drug trafficking is the illicit or illegal movement or trading of drugs from one place to another which is against  internal and international legislation for such practice. It can also be defined as an illegal cultivation, manufacturing, possession, distribution, buying or sales of hard drugs within a country or across the borders of countries. Drug  trafficking has become common practice in developed and undeveloped nations which results to the imprisonment of many people. Examples of such hard drugs are: cocaine, heroin and marijuana.

Illegal Activities in Drug Trafficking

The following illegal activities constitute drug trafficking

  1. Illegal cultivation of hard drugs.
  2. Illegal production/manufacturing of hard drugs.
  3. Smuggling/distribution: This is illicit movement of hard drugs from one place to another.
  4. Possession: It is illegal to have/possess hard drugs in your custody.
  5. Buying hard drugs.
  6. Sales of hard drugs.

Reasons for Trafficking in Drugs

  1. Poverty
  2. Ignorance
  3. Greed
  4. Unemployment
  5. Negative peer pressure
  6. Lack of self discipline

Poverty

People who are poor without any concrete means of livelihood and cannot get aid or support from anywhere may  opt to be of great help to the drug barons.
