The Meaning of Political Apathy
Apathy stems from the ancient Greek word apathiens, which means “lack of feelings”. Apathy is an attitude, not an absence of activity; the feeling of not being interested or not caring either about a particular thing or about life. Political apathy therefore is a situation whereby citizens show negative attitude to the political activities/affairs of their country.
The Dangers of Political Apathy
The following are the dangers of political apathy:
- Political apathy leads to a poor standard of living.
- It breeds an irresponsible government.
- It creates a corrupt electoral system
- It hinders national progress and development
- It allows political charlatans and prostitutes to dominate the affairs of public governance.
- It leads to mismanagement of human and material resources as people with low level of management are left to manage the nation’s resources.
- It reduces the level of political participation in a country or society.
